South Florida's vibrant theater scene is abuzz with excitement as we celebrate the remarkable achievements of our theater community through the prestigious Carbonell Awards. These awards not only recognize outstanding productions but also foster artistic growth, provide educational scholarships, and enhance audience appreciation, instilling civic pride in our local theater landscape.
In the spotlight this year is the Area Stage Company's immersive production of Disney's beloved classic, The Little Mermaid, which has received multiple nominations at the Carbonell Awards. Having graced the stage at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Carnival Studio Theatre throughout the month of August, this epic under-the-sea spectacular transported audiences into a world where the story of Ariel and Eric unfolds all around them.
The Little Mermaid has experienced a resurgence in recent years, with a live-action film in 2023 and a live television special in 2019. Following the resounding success of Area Stage Company's multiple award-winning production of Beauty and the Beast, it was only natural for the Company to dive into another Disney musical adventure.
Leading this reimagined musical production is Giancarlo Rodaz, who last year earned a Carbonell Award for Outstanding Direction of a Musical for Beauty and the Beast. Rodaz describes The Little Mermaid as an all-out party that expanded on the scale of its predecessor. While Beauty and the Beast whisked audiences into a dark fantasy story, The Little Mermaid invited them into a hyper-colorful, seaside bash!
As we eagerly await the Carbonell Awards and the recognition of the outstanding work put into The Little Mermaid, let's celebrate the dedication, creativity, and talent of South Florida's theater artists. Stay tuned for more updates and join us in supporting our local theater community on their remarkable nominations.
